Like me you probably like shortening things. Books become reviews. Reports become one page summaries. Paragraphs morph into bullets. And of course there are TLAs. :-)
Watch out though, as sometimes shortening things changes the meaning or misses the point. You have all heard the expression "Jack of all trades". Many of you will have had your boss share it with you in your review as a compliment. However you all know the full phrase... "Jack of all trades, master of none." So does your boss. And that doesn't sound quite as good.
But did you know that is not the full quote. The full quote is "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one". And that puts a whole new spin on things.
As a generalist rather than a specialist you are versatile, flexible and adept -- and in a rapidly changing business environment where the answers and questions are not necessarily clear that is invaluable.
So next time somebody shares that compliment with you, feel free to share with them the full quote. I bet they don't know it.
THE TOP 10 BOOKS ON CAREERS FOR OPS GENERALISTS

9.5⭐ out of 10
"A MUST READ FOR MENTAL STRENGTH OF ALL COO & CoS -- GENERALISTS EXCEL IN DIVERSE FIELDS"
⚡ HEADLINE INTRO:
Despite the prevailing notion that specialization is the path to success, Range argues that excellence and innovation can be achieved by developing a range of interests and taking the time to discover one's focus in life. By drawing on examples from various fields such as business, sports, science, and human psychology, Range encourages individuals to cultivate an open-minded and curious approach to life.
💛 KEY LEARNINGS:
The value of being a generalist: In his book, Range, David Epstein argues that a broad, interdisciplinary background can lead to greater success in a rapidly changing world. Drawing on diverse examples from sports, science, and business, Epstein shows that being a generalist can help individuals develop creative solutions to problems, adapt to new challenges, and make innovative connections that specialists might miss.
The limits of early specialization: Epstein challenges the idea that success in any field requires early and focused training. Instead, he argues that too much specialization too soon can narrow our perspective and limit our ability to learn and innovate. Epstein draws on research in cognitive science and developmental psychology to argue that a broad base of knowledge and experience can actually help us develop more specialized skills in the long run.
The power of "kind" learning environments: Epstein argues that we learn best when we are challenged, but not overwhelmed. Drawing on research in education and psychology, he suggests that "kind" learning environments - ones that encourage experimentation, failure, and learning from mistakes - can help us develop more flexible, adaptable skills. This is in contrast to "wicked" learning environments, which prioritize rote memorization and discourage exploration.
The role of experimentation and failure: Epstein emphasizes the importance of experimentation and failure in the learning process. He argues that we should not be afraid to take risks and make mistakes, as these experiences can help us develop more creative solutions and innovative ideas. By embracing failure as a necessary part of the learning process, we can develop a growth mindset that helps us adapt to new challenges and opportunities.
The need for interdisciplinary collaboration: Epstein emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in solving complex problems. He argues that specialists from different fields bring unique perspectives and knowledge to the table, and that working together can lead to more creative and effective solutions. Epstein suggests that creating opportunities for collaboration across different fields can help us address some of the biggest challenges facing society today.
💡 TOP TAKEAWAYS:
Starting early and specializing is fashionable, but has dubious merit.
Experimentation is as reliable a route to expertise as early specialization.
If you want it to stick, learning should be slow and hard, not quick and easy.
A narrow focus is unhelpful, and a remedy for this is to think outside the box.
A breadth of experience and interest drives innovation.
The experts and pundits that our society listens to are usually hopeless at making predictions.
To be more of a generalist, you need to change your attitude toward learning and success.
😎 BEST QUOTES:
"If you don't feel a little bit of impostor syndrome, you're not challenging yourself enough."
"We tend to assume that experts are the best solution to any problem, but that's not always the case. Sometimes it takes an outsider, with a fresh perspective and a more diverse background, to see things differently and come up with a breakthrough solution."
"The more well-rounded, and less isolated, our knowledge, the more innovative we can be."
"In a world where technology and our understanding of the universe are constantly changing, it is those who start with a broad foundation and who are adaptable, who are best positioned to thrive."
"The headwinds that specialization and groupthink create can be overcome with a willingness to acknowledge and confront our limitations, to test ourselves and others, to see the world as it is, and not as we wish it were."
"The most successful problem solvers are the ones who have diverse experiences and who approach problems from many different angles."
"Generalists often find their path late, and they juggle many interests rather than focusing on one."
"Generalists are more comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity, because they are used to dealing with a wide range of information and situations."
"When it comes to innovation, it's not just about having lots of ideas, it's about having lots of different ideas, from lots of different sources."
"The most successful people are not the ones who are best at one thing, but the ones who are good at many things and who have the ability to learn new things quickly."
⭐ JBs REVIEW:
This book takes a counter point of view to the 10,000 hours and specialist are best meme. And so helps make many COO and CoS not feel like career failures. Your "range" is your strength...
We have all read that you need 10,000 hours to become a 'master' at anything, and seen the social media accounts advising you need to specialize and niche yourself. And there are plenty of examples of successful people that support this logic. As long as you pick the right area and put in the hours it helps create focus and sometimes if you are good enough fame and fortune.
The trouble with that is some people are just a bit more generalist in nature. "All-rounders" as our school cricket coach used to say. But in the modern world being an "all-rounder" you feel a bit of a failure. You aren't sure on your career options, and actually like having options.
This book doesn't teach you how to be a better COO, CoS or Ops professional. But it does help many have a bit of mental strength and confidence in a world that otherwise tells them they should have been some niche Eng guru, accountant CFO, heart surgeon, or otherwise niched. Be strong people!
👉 READ IF:
You are senior operator thinking through your career, or earlier in your career and having the internal 'generalist vs specialist' debate. The book goes beyond COO and CoS, and even beyond business (i.e. goes into Parenting, Education, Sports, etc)... but relevant messaging to all Senior Ops Professionals as the role is often fairly generalist in nature.

"ITS OK TO EXPERIENCE LOTS OF DIFFERENT ROLES ON YOUR PATH TO SELF-DISCOVERY - FIND FULFILMENT BY EMBRACING UNCERTAINTY"
⚡ HEADLINE INTRO:
"The Squiggly Career" explores the challenges of navigating a career that is characterized by frequent transitions and modern-day obstacles. The book provides research-based advice and practical tips on how to identify one's strengths, values, goals, and motivations in order to apply them effectively in the workplace, and to recognize when they are being overlooked.
💛 KEY LEARNINGS:
Build a personal brand: Tupper suggests that building a personal brand can help us stand out in a crowded job market. This means being intentional about how we present ourselves to the world, including our online presence, our communication style, and our personal values. By crafting a strong personal brand, we can attract new opportunities and build a network of contacts who can help us achieve our career goals.
Develop a portfolio career: Tupper argues that a portfolio career - one that involves multiple income streams and diverse work experiences - can be a smart strategy for navigating a squiggly career. This can involve combining full-time employment with freelancing, consulting, or starting a side hustle. By building a portfolio career, we can create more opportunities for growth and development, while also building financial resilience.
Embrace career experimentation: The Squiggly Career by Helen Tupper encourages readers to take a non-linear approach to career development. Instead of following a straight, upward trajectory, Tupper argues that we should embrace experimentation and be open to trying new things. This can help us discover new interests and strengths that we might not have otherwise explored.
Develop a growth mindset: Tupper emphasizes the importance of developing a growth mindset in order to succeed in a squiggly career. This means being open to learning and growth, embracing challenges and setbacks as opportunities for development, and being willing to take risks and try new things. By cultivating a growth mindset, we can build the resilience and adaptability needed to thrive in a constantly changing job market.
Emphasize soft skills: Tupper suggests that in a squiggly career, soft skills such as communication, adaptability, and creativity are increasingly important. These skills can help us navigate complex and ever-changing work environments, build strong relationships with colleagues and clients, and stay nimble in the face of new challenges. By developing our soft skills, we can build a strong foundation for long-term career success.
